Silence is not always golden.
Click to DonateThe Silent Goldens gives a rare and raw look a family’s first conversations about a suicide, breaking the 30 years of silence that followed the death. The story exposes the unique grief millions of survivors of suicide loss face, exacerbated by a destructive silence that typically descends in the aftermath.
Film has always been a compelling way to broach difficult subjects and normalize public discussion. My documentary’s intention is to foster a better understanding of the terrible human experience of surviving a suicide loss. It’s a cautionary tale about the damage silence can do to loss survivors while showing the healing power of conversation.
As of August 2024, the film is essentially complete, save for one last technical pass to meet the standards for some streaming opportunities. We need to raise the level of the picture (oh those old family photos…) and audio quality so sadly, more post production funds are needed. Any donations will help this last and final step which can bring my film to the widest possible audiences.
In July, I premiered a segment of the film at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Long Term Loss Survivor Summit in Austin, TX as part of a talk I presented about my inspiration and process for getting my family to open up. It was very well received and I even had a few people who heard about the talk, but didn’t attend, ask for more information about the film and where they could see it. I am working to build on the momentum in seeking other opportunities to speak and share the film while pursuing select distribution outlets.
Contributions by those have been touched by suicide has been an incredibly meaningful part of this project and memorial credits are offered in honor of their loved ones lost to suicide which will live on thesiletgoldens.com website. Each donation, whether a memorial or in general support of the film, is a voice added to the mission of breaking down the stigma around suicide and help those suffering in silence to break theirs. Conversation truly helps heal.
